Pangnirtung, or Pang as locals call it, is located on Baffin Island in the Cumberland
Peninsula. It is a small community bordered by snowcapped mountains on one side
and the ocean on the other. Located just outside of the Arctic Circle, Pangnirtung
is one of Nunavut's communities
to witness the midnight sun phenonmenon, when—for about a month starting
near the beginning of June—the sun does not fully set, giving way to 24 hours
of sunshine. The desire to experience this natural marvel draws tourists to this
small community year after year. Sharing the land with arctic animals such as
caribou, polar bears and seals, wildlife viewing opportunities for visitors abound.
Because of its proximity to Auyuittuq
National Park, the town is also a pit stop for those headed to the land
that never melts. Other activities that visitors enjoy include hiking, camping,
skidooing, cross country skiing, and snowmobiling. For the treasure collector,
the town is a great place for shopping for one-of-a-kind aboriginal arts and crafts
including handmade carvings, paintings, and weavings. A visitor's
centre is also located in Pangnirtung to help guests plan activities as well
as educate about the community's culture.
